The history of our Department

The Department of Applied Probability and Informatics was created on July 1, 2014 by the way of merger of the Telecommunication Systems Department and the Department of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics (Rector's order N 119 of 24.02.2014).

Prehistory of the Department

(based on  the article Basharin G. P. Basic Periods of the Development of Applied Mathematics  and Computer Sciences in Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia // Bulletin of Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia. Series "Mathematics. Information Sciences. Physics", 2010, No 1)

The History of the department began well before its official creation and is closely associated with the development of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at the Science Faculty of Peoples' Friendship University of Russia.

In 1961 at the Peoples' Friendship University the Department of Computational Mathematics and Probability Theory was created. The  Associate Professor G.P. Basharin (1956 - Ph.D., 1957-61 - Senior Scientist for Information Transmission Problems, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, 1968 - Doctor of Science, since 1969 - Professor) headed  the department in 1963-1964.

In 1964 prof. Y.A. Ryabov (Moscow State University) became the new chair of the Department because prof. Basharin G.P. desided to focus on his doctoral dissertation "On the mathematical analysis of communication systems and complex structures control" the defense of which took place in 1967.

As a result of the reorganization in 1971, the Department of Computational Mathematics and Probability Theory was merged with the Department of Mathematical Analysis. The new Department was chaired by Professor V. V. Ryzhkov.

In 1980 the Department of Computational Mathematics became an independent one. As a result of students number grouth and an increase in research and teaching capacity of the Department  of Computational Mathematics, which was chaired by Associate Professor A.P. Kolesnikov (1988-1989) the new Department of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics was created.  Professor P.P. Bocharov (a disciple of Professor G.P. Basharin) was the first head of this department. Also the independent course "Programming and Computer Software", headed by Professor I.L. Tolmachev, was introduced.  In 1990 the course "Programming and Computer Software" was transformed into the Department with the same name, and since 1996 is called the Department of Information Technology.

In 1989-1991 the creation of two new departments,a number of  new and interesting external proposals for young staff members have drawn a line under the long-term existence of a unified scientific and educational group, dividing it between the new departments. A considerable part of the staff with prof. Basharin G.P. formed the basis of the Department of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics. Professor P.P. Bocharov (1943-2006), the first head of the Department of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, organized and strengthened the department, attracted new professors and young lecturers. Together with Professor A.V. Pechinkin he wrote a series of textbooks and manuals on the probability theory and mathematical statistics and a monograph on classical queuing theory. Following the example of other universities, including the Department of Probability Theory of Moscow State University, prof. P.P. Bocharov supported the idea of prof. G.P. Basharin to introduce new courses on actuarial and financial mathematics (Basharin G.P. "Elements of Financial Mathematics." M .: INFRA-M, 1997) and with the help of Assistant Professor Yu.F. Kasimov the textbook on financial mathematics was written.

In 1996, the Rector of Peoples' Friendship University  prof. Vladimir Filippov signed the Order № 382 of 18.10.96 about the creation of the independent course "Telecommunication Systems" and appointed Ph.D., professor Samuylov K.E. (also a disciple of Professor G.P. Basharin) as a head of the course.  In 1999 by the order of the Rector of PFUR Professor  Bilibin D.P. (N 417 of 20.10.1999) the independent course "Telecommunication Systems" was transformed into the department with the same name.
